Before our horror story even began, a sinister backstory was already in place in 1800s London. The young Benjamin Barker, a master barber, was transported to Australia on a false conviction, by a corrupt judge, who lusted for Barker’s wife and even raped her, adopting Barker’s daughter as his own. At the start of our story, Barker has broken free and returned from Australia to London, under the alias of Sweeney Todd. Enquiring about an empty apartment (that was once his own) he accidently reveals his true identity to Mrs Lovett, an errant pie maker with whom he then strikes up an unlikely partnership.
From there this twisting tale follows a murderous and brutely path, with a grisely transformation for Mrs Lovett’s pies and her business fortune. Where will it all end, when will the murders stop, will Sweeney Todd every get vengence on his incarcerator and who eat all the pies?
Add in an incredible Sonheim score and you have a musical fit for a massacre.
