The history of Northwich is deeply intertwined with its salt industry and waterways. These channels were crucial in transporting goods and equipment, fuelling the town’s growth and prosperity. With rivers extending up to the Manchester Ship Canal, Northwich became a hub of commerce and industry. Today, while the industrial aspect has waned, the rivers remain a vital part of the town’s identity, now serving as tranquil retreats and sources of leisure.

If you’re eager to embark on an adventure on the River Weaver, Anderton Boat Lift has you covered. Hop on the Edwin Clark trip boat for an exceptional journey and experience the world’s oldest operational boat lift.

For rowing hobbyists, the River Weaver and River Dane offer serene routes amidst lush greenery and lively wildlife.

Those with canal boats can chart a course on the River Weaver, while nature-connected souls can find tranquillity in a day of fishing. And for those who’d rather keep their feet on solid ground, the River Weaver provides charming walking and cycling paths.

For nature enthusiasts, the River Weaver is a wildlife sanctuary. Its diverse ecosystem promises an enchanting display of flora and fauna. Whether you’re an avid bird watcher or a nature admirer, the River Weaver won’t disappoint.

Don’t miss out on the quieter, less-explored River Dane, a waterway that provides a more personal encounter with Mother Nature. The area where the River Dane meets the River Weaver is particularly picturesque and ideal for reflection and photography.

The Trent and Mersey Canal, another diamond in Northwich’s crown, offers a winding route through verdant landscapes, ideal for peaceful walks or leisurely cycling. Pair your exploration of the canal with a visit to Marbury Park, an expansive green haven perfect for picnics, wildlife spotting, and recreational activities. A day spent breathing in fresh air and soaking in scenic views will surely leave you rejuvenated.

Northwich’s waterways are a true treasure, offering a rich tapestry of history, natural beauty, and recreational opportunities.

Whatever waterway you choose, please do remember to be water-safe this summer and keep yourself and your family and friends safe. Always check the area and look out for signs and advice and never go alone.

If you do get into any difficulty in the water, the advice from Cheshire West and Chester Council and partners RNLI and CFRS is to float by following these five simple steps – it could save your life.

  1. Tilt your head back (with ears submerged).
  2. Relax (and try to breathe normally).
  3. Move your hands to help you stay afloat.
  4. It’s OK if your legs sink (we all float differently).
  5. Spread your arms and legs to improve stability.
