Radio Northwich is hoping to spread some Christmas cheer around Cheshire this December when they hold an evening of seasonal music for people to join in with.
‘Carols from your garden’ will take place on Friday 4th December from 6pm, with households encouraged to tune in to Radio Northwich and take part in some community carol singing from doorsteps, balconies and front gardens.
The idea for the event came about after a small community group in Middlewich approached Radio Northwich to see if they could provide a ‘live’ playlist similar to the one they arranged for the stay-at-home VE Day celebrations which took place in May.
However it soon became clear that the initiative could be publicised across Cheshire for different communities to get involved with because annual Christmas events and carol services are very likely to be curtailed this year due to COVID-19.
Those taking part will be able to request their favourite carols and Christmas songs and there will also be a co-ordinated light switch-on to kick-start the festivities on streets right around the county.
All people have to do to get involved is tune in to Radio Northwich through their phone, TV, desktop, tablet or Amazon Alexa, turn their Christmas lights on and then sing.
John Thompson, who is a Partner at Radio Northwich, has spoken about the event and what they’re hoping to achieve by delivering it.
“Christmas should be a joyous time for families and friends to come together and celebrate the festive season and whilst it may not be possible to meet in a traditional way this year, the event will provide an opportunity for families and neighbours to get into the Christmas Spirit as a community.
“We look forward to receiving residents’ favourite Carol requests and will be playing the most popular suggestions.”
The event has been welcomed by Northwich Business Improvement District Project Manager Adam Gerrard, who commented: “Carols from your garden is a lovely way to spread some Christmas cheer to communities here in Northwich and right across Cheshire. I’m sure it will prove really popular and will be a fantastic way for people to come together in a socially distanced way and enjoy the start of the festive season.”
On top of this event, Radio Northwich is also planning to launch a ‘Countdown to Christmas’ which will be a listen and win competition. Full details of this will be announced in due course.
